Case Studies in One Health - ITraP Winter School 2017
Last week was the final NSERC-CREATE funded ITraP (Integrated Training Program in Infectious Disease, Food Safety and Public Policy) winter school for graduate students. The workshop was a collaborative effort between faculty at the University of Saskatchewan and GADVASU (Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University) in Ludhiana, India where the meeting was held. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to attend my first winter school, see some interesting talks, have the chance to showcase some RubinLab research and most of all to work with a group of students on a case. The case that my group of students worked on was a neglected disease called melioidosis which is an environmentally acquired infection caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. The students’ job was to learn as much as they could about this organism and propose solutions to help reduce the burden of disease in the affected populations.
As part of the program, we also had the opportunity to attend the Youth Festival where students showcase their dancing, singing and acting skills for a VERY enthusiastic audience!
