Dongyun's Research Highlighted in Star Phoenix
In today's issue of the Saskatoon Star Phoenix, Drongyun Jung's (recent Rubin lab MSc graduate) research was highlighted in an article in the Young Innovator series. Dongyun's work focused on the presence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in imported plant based food products, and he made some interesting discoveries! Check out the article here, to read more. After doing completing his MSc in Veterinary Microbiology, Dongyun has continued with his academic journey and will

Bev Defends Her Thesis!
Congratulations Bev on the defense of your thesis! Bev joined theRubinlab as a summer student in 2014, and went on to become the first DVM/MSc student in both my lab and the Department of Veterinary Microbiology. Bev’s research focused on the identification of antimicrobial resistant bacteria from imported niche market meats; for her MSc she studied reptile and amphibian meats. She found that these products are an underappreciated source of resistant bacteria including ESBL p

Microbiology in Winnipeg - CSM 2018
This year Veterinary Microbiology had another great showing at the Canadian Society of Microbiologists meeting in Winnipeg, Canada. From the Rubin lab, Ruwini, Beverly and Dongyun all presented posters. It was a great opportunity to bring our guest student (Moses Ikechukwu) with us as well. Beyond us, there was representation from the Hill, Ruzzini and Chen labs as well as some VetMicro alum from across the country. Looking forward to CSM 2019 in Sherbrooke, Quebec! #Canadian

Gearing Up For Poster Season!
The WCVM poster day is always a great place to get practice presenting and suggestions before debuting results for the world at a conference. After today's premiere, you will have a chance to see Bev, Ruwini and Dongyun's work at the 2018 Canadian Society of Microbiologists conference this June in Winnipeg, Canada. #Graduatestudent #poster #WCVM #Resistancesurveillance #Brachyspira

Case Studies in One Health - ITraP Winter School 2017
Last week was the final NSERC-CREATE funded ITraP (Integrated Training Program in Infectious Disease, Food Safety and Public Policy) winter school for graduate students. The workshop was a collaborative effort between faculty at the University of Saskatchewan and GADVASU (Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University) in Ludhiana, India where the meeting was held. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to attend my first winter school, see some interesting talks

Engaging the Public with Plate Art
Who says Microbiology is boring? The RubinLab’s own Dongyun Jung has put together some plate art for display at Vetavision 2017, the WCVM’s triannual open house. Dongyun has used Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli in his latest works which are proudly displayed in the “Germs, Worms and Toxins” booth – stop by and a vet student will be happy to give you the run down on these bacteria that can be beautiful and dangerous at the same time… just don’t forget to wash your

Do Chickens in Small Flocks Harbour Superbugs?
I’m pleased to announce the first paper to come out of a collaborative project between theRubinlab and researchers at the University of Guelph, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Congratulations to Kazal for successfully defending his MSc thesis entitled "Antimicrobial resistance and molecular characterization of Escherichia coli isolated from Ontario chickens"! Kazal joined the group in January 2015, and is now officially the first Rubin lab alumnus - it's a very big day for us all. Thanks to Drs. Poster Season is Upon Us!
Poster season is certainly upon us and RubinLab members have been busy sharing the results of their investigations with the world. First Roshan had the opportunity to share the results of his investigation entitled "The Genetic Basis of Tetracycline Resistance in Canine Staphylococcus pseudintermedius" at the StaphPath2017 conference which was held in conjunction with Antimicrobials 2017 in Adelaide, Australia. Joe also had the chance to present some of Beverly Morrison's wor
